Using Medication to Help You Get Pregnant- What You Need to Know About Common Fertility Drugs
If you and your partner are having trouble Conceiving a child on your own, you may be started on a regiment of medication to help you get pregnant. If you are, odds are you will have questions about the drugs you are prescribed. Here is a breakdown of some of the most commonly prescribed fertility drugs for women, what they treat, and how they work.
Clomiphene: Usually known under its brand names of Clomid or Serophene. This is the most commonly used medication to help you get pregnant. Clomid is a pill taken orally that is prescribed to help women who are having trouble ovulating regularly and for unexplained infertility. It works by stimulating glands in your brain to release two types of naturally occurring hormones- LSH and LH. These hormones then tell your ovaries to produce and release mature eggs that are ready for fertilization. Major side effects can include a slight increase of conceiving multiples, and developing enlarges ovaries.
Metformin: Also known as glucophage. This medication is prescribed when insulin resistance is thought to be the cause of infertility, and in cases of PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). This drug works by reducing insulin resistance (it is also used to treat type 2 diabetes). Once the insulin level is normal, menstrual periods and Ovulation usually become regular.
Gonadotropins: A really long, scary sounding word that basically means these medications duplicate the hormones your brain normally produces naturally. These medications are always given as an injection. Often used together with Clomid (if it doesn’t produce results on its own) and with Iui procedures (where sperm is injected into the uterus artificially). Here are the commonly used types of Gonadotropin* medication to help you get pregnant:
- Human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG). Known under the brand names Repronex or Menopur. This is prescribed for women who don’t ovulate because their pituitary gland fails to stimulate ovulation. HMG contains both FSH and LH, and directly stimulates the ovaries to ovulate.
- Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Known under the brand names Gonal-F, Follistim, or Bravelle. FSH works by stimulating the ovaries to produce mature egg follicles.
- Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). Known under the brand names Ovidrel and Pregnyl. Used in combination with clomiphene, hMG or FSH, this drug stimulates the follicle to release its egg (ovulate).
It is important to know that using these types of injected medication to help you get pregnant greatly increases the Risk Of Getting Pregnant with multiples. The risk of carrying multiples increases from 1%-2% in the normal population to 15%-20%.
As with any prescription, discuss the risks and side effects of these medications with your doctor before and during treatment. Don’t be afraid to talk about any concerns you may have.
